Welcome to Unit 10: Social Media! Posting to this forum is required and must be completed as part of the Conference Forum component of this course. Please select one of the following options:Describe how your understanding and use of information has changed through your learning in this course. How will you apply your knowledge of nursing informatics to your nursing practice?Share the personal social media guidelines you developed in this unit’s Learning Activity 2. How do you see these being used in your professional and personal life?Share the social media strategy you developed in this unit’s Learning Activity 4. What opportunities do you see for launching this strategy in the future? Before you begin your posting, read the most recent 5 to 8 postings in this forum and think about how you can add to the discussion. You may respond to one of the entries posted by a classmate and/or you may share examples from your practice setting. Your posting should be substantive (that is, adding to the discussion, not merely agreeing with what someone else has said) and should reflect a sound understanding of the content of the unit.Limit your contribution to one or two ideas, concepts, or themes so that others can follow your conversation more easily (maximum 150 words). Remember, you are writing to share your thoughts and to invite your classmates into an open dialogue. Lengthy postings with many points often go unread or unchallenged because there is too much information to respond to. Accordingly, you can always post more than once in the forum.Include a reference citation or URL for a useful resource or an example of one of the concepts discussed in the unit. This will enrich your posting and enhance your classmates’ learning. Just a reminder that all citations and references should be formatted as per APA 7th edition.****Please just reply to this thread instead of starting a new thread.WillyPS. I am no longer as intimidated by all the new technology that has been introduced to nursing and in life in general. My fear has been replaced with a willingness to learn new technology with critical reflection on both the positive and negative implication of the technology. In terms of social media, the only social media I participate in is Facebook. My personal guidelines for the use of social media align with the International Nurse Regulator Collaborative’s [INRC] (2016) position statement and the 6 P’s of social media use. In short they suggest a nurse be professional, positive, patient free, protective of oneself, consider privacy and pause before posting on social media (INRC, 2016). The social media strategy I intend to invoke is one of abstinence. I will need to increase my understanding of social media a great deal more before I would attempt to participate in it. As step one in my learning I plan to seek out the assistance of mentor ( a colleague that uses social media) and follow them on social media, after that we will see where my journey takes me.ReferencesInternational Nurse Regulator Collaborative (2016). Therefore, regulations and law mandates nurses to maintain highest degree of standards regarding privacy and confidentiality. In today’s day and age, social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc. are used by everyone including nurses. Although, the intent of social media is to be positive and use it for interacting with friends, family, and followers, it may have some unintended negative consequences(CLPNA, 2021). As a nurse and a nursing student, I have understood my professional and ethical obligation to use social media in a positive way and take all measures to protect patient information and conduct myself as a dignified professional (College of Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA, 2021). Furthermore, as a nurse, I should never accept a friend request from a former patient or client. Additionally, I should have extra security measures to keep my account safe as any information posted online can be saved as a screenshot and sent to the employer (CLPNA, 2021). Nurses should take all measures to maintain anonymity and do not provide any information which may help identify individuals and organizations. Conclusively, social media can be beneficial in many aspects of life if used safely and ethically.STUDENT 1 My understanding and use of privacy and legislative regulations have improved during this course. Assignment 2 enhanced my tacit knowledge to a more concrete one, as I had not taken the time to read CARNA regulations and how they are used in the RN practice. I also learned how to navigate the Canadian government’s website to find information and how it affects healthcare professionals. Furthermore, navigating the Alberta Health Services (AHS) website to locate information surrounding the privacy department team allowed me to discover areas with less familiarity. In my current practice, I have found there is a great need to know how to navigate the internet in a way that is quick and safe. Going forward, the knowledge I have developed in this course will affect my practice significantly in some areas and has fortified others in different ones. My reluctance to post or repost anything on social media has been fortified. Cheers! STUDENT2I have understood that healthcare is constantly changing to keep up with technological advancements in healthcare and as nurses are in the front lines of patient care, they often feel the impact of these changes and must adapt. My timing of taking this course aligned well with implementation of ConnectCare, an electronic system that replaced all paper-charts in my workplace and provided healthcare providers one central access point to patient information, common clinical standards and best healthcare practices. The learning and knowledge gained through this course enhanced my acceptance of this clinical information system while some of my nursing colleagues were skeptical. I witnessed the role of informatics in enhancing patient care, improving communication and continuity of care. This course emphasized the protection of the privacy, confidentiality, and security of health information and I apply these concepts to my practice. There are many specific situations where particularly confidential information is shared with other care providers in ConnectCare such referrals to physiotherapist, mental health teams etc. I always make sure that I act in accordance with the Health Information Act while sharing and accessing patient information on “as needed only” basis to do my job rather than browsing someone’s chart “out of curiosity”.STUDENT3Much of your post reflects my own feelings about learning in this course. Prior to enrolling in this program, I never envisioned nursing as a field that required significant technological knowledge and expertise. However, I now realize that part of our responsibility involves keeping informed about new medical innovations that change the way in which we perform our roles. This course has motivated me to regularly read nursing and other medical news and information to learn about new advances and the way in which they will change my work.
