The threaded discussions are listed as separate topics within the module. Students must engage in each of the topics in each module in order to receive the points assigned to the entire forum. The forum topics include a Faith Integration discussion and the textbook and article readings for this module. For this forum, the moderators for each topic must post one major reflection with the content heading of “Moderated by (student name)”. This post will describe the content since you are leading the class discussion and should pose questions that the group thinks relevant to the discussion; other students must post an initial content reflection and at least two responsive postings to other student reflections. Note to Moderators: Your group members will still need to earn the points for the forum discussion, meaning that you will need to post in each of the topic areas and reply to others’ comments. (as an example, if you post a “moderated by” posting on Faith Integration, you will need to have content posting on text/article and two replies.)This is a threaded discussion about the biblical, Christian, or historical family scenario presented each week. Each student must post a reflective paragraph that identifies elements of Bowen’s Family Systems that are noted in the scenario and then respond to two other student postings.Biblical Family of NoahThe story of Noah told in the modern English of the Message Bible can be found in the Files through this link The Family Tree of the Human Race – Message Bible Story of Noah.docx Download The Family Tree of the Human Race – Message Bible Story of Noah.docxThis story comes 10 generations after Adam, who had walked closely with God, met in the Garden of Eden and fellowshipped with God – but then he disobeyed God and was sent out of the Garden to work for his food by tilling the land himself and growing his own crops rather than having them provided in a garden that God planted! This must have been a terribly difficult transition! We do know that Adam taught Cain, and no doubt his third son, Seth, who became the son of promise and the head of the family line after Adam, to grow crops and to tend animals. The Bible is unclear about how many other children there were in each generation; it just lists those in the direct line to Noah.It is interesting to note that, while Adam had “walked with God,” we do not see that language until the 7th generation when it says that Enoch “walked steadily with God,” even saying it twice (which in Hebrew literature is a form of emphasis). Then God just took Enoch to be with Him beyond our time/space continuum! Enoch was just gone! That must have shaken up a few folks! Anyway, after 3 generations, we have Noah, of whom the Bible says, “Noah was a good man, a man of integrity in his community. Noah walked with God.” So evidently relationship with God was passed down the generations, but only a few folks had a close enough relationship to have it noted in the historical text that they “walked with God.”Of Noah we know that he was the Ark builder; in fact, he is known across cultures even today, one of the more famous biblical figures, because of the Flood and his survival with his family and a whole lot of pairs of animals on a three-floored huge boat! At God’s command, he built the Ark according to God’s specific directions, filled it with food, stood aside as God caused all the animals to miraculously arrive in pairs for their boat ride, and took his wife and his three sons (Shem – whose descendants spread eastward from Persia and the Middle East toward South East Asia, Japheth – whose descendants spread northward from Turkey through Europe and northern Asia, and Ham – whose descendants spread west from Canaan on the Mediterranean coast and southward through Africa) and their wives onboard. Then God closed the door! The rain storm lasted 40 days and flooded the whole earth (almost every culture around the world has a flood myth), and it took 150 days for the waters to subside and for the Ark to land somewhere in the Ararat mountains. We don’t actually know where all that rain came from, but I hypothesize that the earth had an water envelope around it (the Creation account says that God divided the waters above the sky from those below the sky), which then filtered the sunlight, allowing people to live very long lives (which is not true of those born after the flood). If you read the attached story, you will see that Methuselah was 369 when his grandson Noah was born and he lived 969 years, which means he died in the year of the Flood! Now I must make a disclaimer and say that the modern movie about Noah is wildly inaccurate and totally dramatized, Hollywood style! The biblical account does not go into detail about the family relationships. However, both Shem and Japheth were commended by Noah for having respect when he celebrated the end of the flood with a bit more wine than he should have and passed out on his bed. Ham, on the other hand, was cursed by his father for being completely disrespectful toward his father and was told that he would end up being a servant to his brothers! Anyway, the two older brothers seem to have followed their father’s values, and the Hebrew line comes down through Shem (the oldest son) down to Abraham and his descendants, some of whom you will see in other stories over the semester.
