The Medical Director of the facility where I work is a Psychiatrist, I have been to a few conferences where he was a speaker. He is a great resource; I have saved the PowerPoints he presented. In the conferences, I able to collect resources and network with professionals that I will be able to contact as I see the need. I remember thinking, what great opportunity I will have going forward already hearing these professionals speak. Psychiatric NP students have a great advantage when it comes to preceptorship, being there are a lot of smaller agencies that are able to help. With the large medical organizations, it can be more difficult to get approved to preceptor with their providers, due to so many policies and administration being involved.

With networking in my area, I plan to note what I like about each agency and what I dislike due to being able to think ahead on where I will want to work upon completing my program. Preceptorship has many benefits, reality-based knowledge, skill acquisition, confidence, and professional socialization but also preceptor-preceptee relationship/friendship are formed which can lead to a starting position in your career for this degree. (Exploring the Intrinsic Benefits of Nursing Preceptorship: a Personal Perspective, 2018).

I noticed on Facebook, some students are listing their academic advisor as a resource. As for now, I do not understand this. In the past, my academic advisor for my BSN was a great resource in the beginning stages of my classes starting the program. Currently, I have not used my advisor, but after watching the video, it appears my academic advisor can have a large impact on my success in this program and possibly my career going forward (Module 2 (Weeks 2-3): Academic and Professional Strategies and Resources, 2018). I will be keeping this information in my toolbox.

In the student orientation, I learned that the grade book can be used more than just learning what your grade is. If you go to grade, it will also tell you what is due, when and you if you click on the assignment that is not submitted, it will bring you to the assignment (Module: Your Master’s Experience at Walden University, n.d.). This is a second way to find out what is coming up. The calendar is also another way to keep track of what is due. The calendar is color-coded for each class, on the left side of the screen, you can uncheck a class so what shows on the calendar is only for a specific class.

RESPOND TO STUDENT # 2 Below

The first week of Walden University’s online program to obtain my MSN was a little challenging for me. I was one of the students that at first drastically under estimated the work that I would have to put in to complete an online program. The result was me withdrawling from one of my two classes due to poor time manangement skills. I was overwhelmed.

Once i got over the first week and began to do assignments I felt a little rusty. Its ironic because I have only been out of school for six years. I was finding it hard to save my work and submit it. I actually had a learning curve with the word document on my laptop because i am so accustomed to Microsoft Word. Being a millennial and having worked with computers since I was seven I could not believe the difficultly I was having. As Kaufman (2015) had stated online education offers convenience and flexibilty. I began to think this convenience would be my down fall as I tend to procrastinate.

As I continued with this week’s readings, I felt much more confident. The article “10 traits of successful online learners” was the article I found most encouraging because I felt that each of the tips were qualities I have within myself. Since beginning this program my love for nursing education has sky-rocketed again. Interest in learning and adaptability were noted in this article as traits a successful online learner possess. Then the article state to remember why you are here and to keep that goal close.

I enrolled in the nurse practitioner program after going back and forth between Nurse Practitioner and Nurse Informaticist. Truth is, I am a people person and I love being hands on in the nursing field. I wanted to advance my degree however, I didn’t want to remove myself from the patient too much.

My Questions/ Concerns

1) I had know idea there were voices to APA. As if APA wasn’t challenging enough now I’ve learned of active vs passive voice. Emphasis has been placed on active voice as it makes writing clear. ( Walden Writing Center, 2018)

2) I feel like I used study groups a lot to complete my undergraduate degree. 10 Tips for Being a Successful Online Learner suggest that we be open-minded and adaptable. Would anyone be willing to study via zoom meetings as we advance further in to the program? I’m going into this program alone and studying became a concern for me.

3) I didn’t realize landing a preceptor could be a challenge. I will work on finding one now. Thanks for the heads up colleagues.

4) I did not realize the importance of staying in touch with my academic advisor until I watched the Walden video. I will be sure to reach out to him.

5) Lastly, I am concerned about graduating and cost. Both of which i try not to think too much about. I am going to give this program my all and I am confident that I will complete the program. Persistence will get us all through!

Initial question:

Strategies for Addressing Questions

In Module 1, you began building a foundation for your success by considering a network-individuals and teams who can help you to clarify and execute on the vision. A network is most helpful when you are comfortable asking questions. Chances are other members of your network have experienced similar questions and may have helped guide others toward resolutions that can now be helpful.

In this Discussion, focus on the questions you are ready to ask as your journey begins. Keep in mind that sharing questions is often a great way to help others who have similar questions even if they do not realize it!

To prepare:

  • Reflect on questions or concerns you might have as you begin the MSN program.
  • Consider the individuals, teams, and departments you previously considered in Module 1 as well as how they may provide support with addressing these questions and concerns.

By Day 3 of Week 2

Post any questions or concerns that you are willing to share with the group. The Discussion board represents an opportunity to network with your course colleagues, and others may have the same questions or concerns.

By Day 6 of Week 2

Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ posts by offering a possible resolution to their questions/concerns with supporting documentation, if possible, or expanding on their thinking and providing an example as support.

Click on the Reply button below to reveal the textbox for entering your message. Then click on the Submit button to post your message.
