A special assessment needs to be performed because If leadership is only relying on a SPACE analysis, leadership would not be addressing faculty or administrators. Also, the best way to gauge if an organization is healthy or not is to review its financials. If there is adequate money coming in to cover staff and services, with some reserve for emergencies the organization can be reasonably confident that it is financially healthy.

For example, if a non-profit hospital makes a decision about purchasing a new MRI machine, but does not consult the administrators of that department leadership could order an inadequate MRI machine that would not meet the needs of the hospital. It is always important to get the input of departments that you are making a decision about. Also, alternate ways of equipment acquisition should be reviewed such as leasing.
