Roberto has been married to Sonia for 14 years. They have three children: Hector, 14 years old; Jose, 12 years old; and Sophia, 10 years old. Mr. and Mrs. Sosa’s relationship with Hector has been stained recently due to Hector’s gang activity and illegal drug use, with recent encounters with law enforcement. Although Hector is struggling in school, the children attend school and are doing relatively well. Sonia’s mother, 71-year-old Rosa, is living with them because she had a severe heart attack and showed signs of mental deterioration and was unable to care for herself, adding additional financial burden on the family. Sonia’s father, Elmer, had hypertension and died 4 years ago from coronary artery disease at the age of 69.Green Valley is a medium-sized rural town with a population of about 35,000 residents and a struggling economy with many underfunded public services. However, the community has a strong church network and involvement in social support organizations. The Sosa family regularly attends the local Catholic Church and volunteer at the American Red Cross.Roberto only attended a few years of school in his native country of Honduras. He never learned to read or write and only speaks limited English. His wife has been managing the finances and household operations and works at a stressful job at the local convenience store. Roberto had worked harvesting crops until being hired to clean the machines at a small local meat processing company for the last 10 years. He is in this country illegally.Two months after losing his job he was not feeling well and went to an urgent care clinic where his blood glucose and blood pressure were to be found high. Roberto smokes about a pack of cigarettes per day and drinks some Tequila every day to relax and was advised by the health provider to stop. The family paid the urgent care clinic in cash because health insurance coverage was lost after losing his job. Robert was referred to the nursing service at the local health department to receive further support for his health issues and to work with the family in adjusting to the diagnosis. Out of desperation, he joined the local literacy program to improve his English as well as his reading and writing skills.  CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS: 1.
