Social media refers to internet-based tools such as applications that are used for various reasons such as communication and can play a vital role in enhancing situational awareness, the flow of instructions as well as improving the speed of preparedness of disasters and events happening around in our world. Methods of strengthening situational awareness that is typically used are emails, land mobile radio, 911 calls, mobile text alerts, TV and radio, maps, GPS, landline phones and posters. However, social media has enabled the speed of communication to improve significantly and therefore ensure information about our environment and preparedness activities are not only efficient but also real time. Social media has been used in emergency operations across the world by ensuring early warning information is spread in a real-time manner. Through collaboration with the affected communities, information regarding the disasters is spread through WhatsApp groups, Facebook and Twitter pages showing the path of the storms or the place the collapse will hit.
Social media has also enabled the real-time gathering of information about certain emergency events. People from the area affected post on their walls real-time data, and the emergency responders can respond more effectively. Moreover, feedback can be obtained by the team of first responders through social media, warnings can be issued on time, and affected victims can be assisted or even rescued in time. Social media has made disaster preparedness effective and hence more lives have been saved around the world. Secondly, social media can be used to map areas affected by a disease, earthquakes, or any other dangers. When Haiti was hit by an earthquake in 2010, social media through various tools such as Twitter hashtags provided real-time reports of the catastrophe (Alsaedi et al. 2015). Digital mapping through satellite technology and then relaying the information on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Flickr, Ushahidi, and Reddit enabled first responders to access locations of survivors, access clean water through maps from social media tools such as Ushahidi and share the information in real time and made humanitarian and recovery efforts more manageable. More recently, when a soccer team and their coach were trapped in a cave in Thailand, social media was used to send solutions to the rescue team from halfway across the world. WhatsApp groups have also been used to enhance security and even fight against terrorism. Finally, through WhatsApp groups and other social media channels, suspects can be identified in real time, and the information is shared with the necessary authorities to avert tragedy.
