Of the many concepts of nursing to use in daily practice, I am a strong believer in the holistic type of approach in nursing to help with the promotion of maintenance, restoration and health. Holistic Nursing is defined as all nursing practice that has healing the whole person as its goal. Thus, holistic nursing can be practiced in any setting (Thornton, 2019). Although the patient may be in the office to discuss a specific issue, the patients whole health status is important to understand so that the treatment plan will incorporate any co-morbidities that may be present. APRNs can play a key role in assisting individuals in their healing process because APRNs are able to bring additional expertise to these interactions and to perform holistic health assessments. The partnership between the nurse and the individual is evident in Nojimas [a Japanese nursing theorist] definition of nursing. With the advent of globalization, it is important to review the characteristics of nursing outside of Western medicine (Jansen, Jansen & Blair, 2015).
The second concept that I truly believe is the foundation for any nursing/patient relationship is communication. Communication must be achieved in a dignified manner as to maintain professionalism while tailoring the manner of communication to the specific patients needs and abilities to understand what is being discussed. It is important to speak to the patient with a level of language skills that they will comprehend and thus, it is imperative to understand the patients background as well. To achieve this, APNs need to take time with their patients to learn about their needs while demonstrating courtesy, kindness and sincerity. Also, the nurses should devote time to the patient to communicate with the necessary confidentiality, and must not forget that this communication includes persons who surround the sick person, which is why the language of communication should be understood by all those involved in it (Kourkaouta & Papathanasiou, 2014).
The APN must always remember to use a holistic approach with their patients. The patient is a person who came to the advanced clinician for medical care and guidance and will be sharing their personal and private issues. The APN needs to build their trust and form a relationship that will promote the healing process while maintaining open communication. The more trust the patient has with the APN, the more information they are likely to share. This will allow the APN to help the patient work towards positive outcomes for the medical issue(s) while being able to treat the patient as a whole person.

Bender (2018) defines metaparadigm as a set of propositions or fundamental principles central to a specific discipline, or which establishes the relationship between different concepts. The basic metaparadigms of nursing include the nurse, health, person or patient, and the environment. One of the additional concepts that that think is crucial in my area of practice is holism. In line with this concept, I believe that the various aspects of a person’s life play a significant role in their health outcomes. Therefore, it is vital to consider the different factors that could negatively or positively affect the health of the patient. As Booth and Kaylor (2018) purport, treating the patient requires more than just evaluating and curing the observed symptoms. Instead, health practitioners should strive to understand the spiritual, cultural, historical, socioeconomic, physical, and environmental factors that could hinder or enhance patient healing.
I also believe that collaboration is an essential concept in nursing practice. Nurses interact with different individuals throughout their practice. They, therefore, need to have collaborative skills to build and maintain meaningful relationships with their nurse colleagues, physicians, the patients, and their families, and the support staff. I think that the key to effective collaboration is excellent communication. With communication, they can identify the patients’ needs, help them understand the recommended treatment plans, and help them deal with the other challenges they may face. Proper communication can also aid the collaboration process by helping to avoid medical errors. Nurses often function as a team comprising of members from different disciplines. Therefore, it is only through collaboration that we can understand the different roles of each team member, and be able to perform the function expected of us.
