They were both previously married to men: Terri has two adult sons, and Carol has one adult daughter, each from their previous marriages. They began their relationship at ages 54 and 49 years, respectively, citing it was important to them to stay married until their children were older.Terri and Carol are White and met later in life. They knew each other as neighbors and became friends. Eventually, they realized their friendship included a romantic attraction. They divorced their spouses before starting their relationship. Carol’s husband remarried and lives in the same town, but they have minimal contact. Terri’s ex-husband moved to a different state and they do not talk. Terri worked as a teacher before retiring 20 years ago. Carol worked in the banking industry as a manager and retired 12 years ago. Neither of them was out at work or with their neighbors. They have a few same-sex female couple friends, and they get together on weekend evenings for dinner or movies. They are financially stable, although they have not legally merged their financial resources. They do not engage at a public level with other gender or sexual minority people other than their closest friends, nor do they attend work events together, such as holiday parties. They have not married.Their children are married and all live within a 4-hour driving radius. Terri’s elder son has two children in college and her younger son has a child who is finishing high school. Carol’s daughter has three college-aged children. Neither Terri nor Carol have living parents, but Terri has a younger sister and Carol has an older brother. They have occasional contact with their siblings, usually around family gatherings such as holidays.Carol’s daughter is very accepting of Terri and Carol’s relationship, has included Terri in family gatherings, and treats her as a “second mom.” She stops by to visit at least once every other week. Terri’s children have very limited contact with her and she rarely sees her grandchildren. Terri’s children spend holidays with their father, and may call on special occasions, such as her birthday, but she rarely discusses her children. Terri likes to read and volunteers at the public library, while Carol enjoys gardening and bird watching. They state their interests lie in spending time together, going to concerts or art exhibits, walking, and cooking meals together.They state that “everyone knows” they are in a relationship, but it never was talked about because no one specifically asked. Both state they introduce each other as “my best friend.” Terri’s family of origin is Catholic, while Carol was raised with very little religious upbringing, stating it wasn’t a priority, but with some Christian influences. Terri said she occasionally still goes to Catholic mass by herself and seemed uncomfortable when asked this question.Terri was recently hospitalized due to a heart attack. She has a long history of alcohol use, and smoked for several years, although she stopped 10 years ago. She needed a by-pass surgery.
