In 2015 the most serious environmental mishaps in the
history of California occurred when an oil pipeline ruptured in Santa Barbara
County, and spilled over 100,000 gallons of heavy oil into the Pacific Ocean. Much of the oil washed ashore along the
coastline beaches and rocky areas.
Responders, paid workers, and volunteers, participated in the clean-up
efforts. Although provided with
personal protective equipment, many workers still complained of various health
issues as a result of handling and being exposed to this crude oil. Along with the Santa Barbara spill and the
Gulf Oil Spill of 2010, there have been a number of natural disasters, wild
fires, earthquakes, and terrorist events in the last 10 years in the U.S.
that have placed responders at risk. The topic for your paper will be “Occupational Health Hazards
Associated with Emergency Responders”.
Select one event requiring emergency response that has occurred in
the U.S. within the past 10 years.
In the paper you will:
1. Indicate which disaster or event you
have chosen and briefly explain what happened and when.
2. Explain what the overall occupational
health issues are concerning emergency responders pertinent to this disaster or
event (may include history, types of hazards, statistics on number of
illnesses, etc.).
3. Discuss in more detail one of the
health hazards associated with response to that chosen disaster/event.
4. Discuss what U.S. federal safety and
health regulations would be or are applicable to this hazard concerning
responders.
5. If desired, provide your opinion
(political or otherwise) on this topic.
