One thing that stuck out to me throughout this chapter was the life expectancy throughout the years. In the 1800s, life expectancy was below the age of 40 and slowly progressed towards 70 throughout the 1900s. I found it very interesting how much the economic status affects the health and death rate of the country. It was obvious that the higher income, more industrial countries were progressing to a higher life expectancy over the years, whereas countries in Africa and South America were staying a low life expectancy. To be able to increase life expectancy all over, I believe the continents and countries should come together and help each other out. This could include wealthier countries donating supplies, resources, money, and/or time to help each other out.

After reading through the “Global Health and Indicators” presentation and watching “Stats that Reshape your World View”, I was shocked. I had never really taken the time to consider how many factors could have an effect on your overall health. Before when I thought about health, I mostly thought about how we can be born with a certain disease or we can contract it from our environment. I never really took time to think about how things such as social status and our lifestyle could have an effect on our health. Watching “Stats that Reshape your World View” sort of put this in perspective for me because it showed how different parts of the same country can be very different when it comes to health. I think the best example of this was when it discusses China. We tend to think of China as a country that is pretty advanced medically, but we don’t think about the fact that there are still parts of China, like Guizhou, that are very different from the more developed parts, like Shanghai. Before watching this video, I never really considered that different parts of a country could be dealing with different health issues, I think most of the time we just consider the country as a whole.
