Therefore, this assignment has been developed for you to demonstrate your literature search skills, begin to appraise research articles, and think about the implications research may have for nursing practice.Research begins with a question because we want to know why something happens and what to do about it. Think of an area of nursing you are interested in.Next, develop a clinical research question. A well-constructed research question, that is relevant to a patient problem, will facilitate finding current evidence for use in practice. (Note that you cannot implement everything you read as there is a very complex process that has to occur first.) Use the PICO format to organize your question. The four elements of the PICO model are:P: Patient/ProblemI: InterventionC: ComparisonO: Outcome Example #1: Maybe you have been hearing that washing your hands is important and your teachers have told you that patients acquire infections in hospital. You wonder, how important is hand washing and how much of a difference does it really make? You may formulate the question “Does hand washing reduce the number of hospital acquired infections?” In an effort to organize your search, ask yourself, who is the patient in this case (hospitalized patients), what is the key problem for the patient (hospital acquired infection), what intervention or treatment are you considering (hand washing), and what is the desired outcome you are hoping for (reduced infection rates) or what is the outcome you are trying to avoid (hospital acquired infections). Read the research study and answer the following questions. The initial 5 marks are for your research question and PICO. The remaining 25 marks are divided into the sections of 1) literature search, 2) critical appraisal of the research study, and 3) the implications the research has for nursing practice.
