Ensuring this sensitive information is protected indicates quality patient care. Federal statutes such as HIPPA sets a standard for the transmission of health information. When nurses fail to follow these regulations, penalties may be taken. There are many different levels of HIPPA violations. Sometimes, when it is thought to be an accidental violation, internal steps may be taken to solve the problem. When a willful violation occurs, nurses are at risk of losing professional licensure and facilities may be fined for the wrongdoing (What, 2021).   Most often, nurses are trained during employment orientation and sometimes annually on ways to prevent a privacy breach. Simple acts such as always logging off workspaces, never sharing passwords, and positioning computer screens aways from potential viewers, are all great ways to prevent a violation. With the expanded use of HIT, security is often the driving force for widespread application. HIT should not be seen as a threat to information security. As with the original HIPPA statute, appropriate privacy education should be the priority. According to Nazeha and colleagues (2020), training and educating health care workers to be digitally competent is an utmost priority. Digital health competency training can lead to increase awareness of ethical, legal, privacy, and security implications relating to IT. With an increased awareness of health information and security, nurses can provide quality patient care without the risk of a HIPPA violation. ReferencesNazeha, N., Pavagadhi, D., Bhone, M. Yes, it can be easy if you have been doing it from the start especially if you are aware of your surroundings. Most nurses fall into the bad habit while in nursing school. During nursing school, you are put into groups for your clinical assignments. At that moment you are in your first nursing click. Your click will eat together, take breaks together, leave together, and most importantly talk about patients together. This is a HIPPA violation, but we look at it as a learning experience. Then you get that cool, gross patient that you sneak a pic of his wounded foot for Snap. Or maybe you write about a crazy patient that’s seeing things fly around. In a poll of medical school administrators nationwide, 60% said they were aware of unprofessional postings and 13% of those postings contained breaches of patient confidentiality (Polito, 2012, p. 39). This is the reason when nurses get on to the floor, they must break those habits. It is not their fault, but the age of social media, and the instructors not having consequences.     Nurses additionally must regulate what information is being said about the patient and in front of who. Some patients do not mind sharing their medical information with their family. While others do not want any information shared. Our job is to respect and protect the patient’s wishes. At times this does cause a predicament, but it is all part of patient care. Reference Polito, J. (2012).
