He recently moved into group residential accommodation due to his increasing support needs which his dad, as a sole carer, was unable to meet. Simon has difficulty with gross and fine motor skills such as walking, writing, using utensils and coordination. He finds completing tasks of daily living difficult and is no longer independent in his personal care. Simon has been diagnosed with Fragile X tremor ataxia, which is affecting his balance, memory and causing tremors. He also has a heart murmur, repetitive speech, difficulty with learning new tasks and his behavioural/emotional problems include aggression towards himself (self-harm) and others, anxiety/shyness and difficulties maintaining eye contact. While Simon is generally friendly and has a good sense of humour, his challenges are learning how to behave and communicate appropriately in social settings. Simon’s long-term memory is good but his short term memory problems are affecting his ability to carry out functional life skills. All of the changes Simon is experiencing are causing him to become easily frustrated and he cries a lot.
