I have chosen to conduct a descriptive phenomenological qualitative research study. According to Reiners (2012), a descriptive phenomenological qualitative study is one in which the researcher desires to explain, or describe, the phenomenon of study (refusal of pediatric vaccination protocols) and sets aside any preconceived notions or judgements, aka brackets their biases (pg. 2). This type of study philosophically supports a system of impartiality (Reiners, 2012).
Title of Instrument
Observer as participant
Participants know and recognize the researcher. There is limited interaction between the researcher and participants; the goal of the researcher is to remain as neutral as possible (Sauro, 2015).
The Interview
The interview is the main procedure associated with data collection in the qualitative study and research of human experience or human scientific research (Englander, 2012).
Level of Measurement
Measurement is inappropriate in a qualitative study as the focus is human experience.
Description of Data Collection Procedures
According to Englander (2012), the greatest instrument of use in a qualitative study is the researcher him or herself. As qualitative studies are focused on why individuals have specific thoughts and feelings regarding a particular stimulus (Sutton & Austin, 2015), standard methods of measurements are inappropriate.
Following direct observation of specified interactions, the interview is utilized to create a process through which the researcher may obtain information from the participants perspective. According to Davison (2014), the interview is comprised of a few main open-ended, non-leading questions (pg. 2) and any supportive questions so as to illicit in-depth answers. Reduction of researcher bias and increase in validity is noted (Davison, 2014).
In phenomenological research, any participants are viewed as co-researchers (Waters, 2017); review of the meaning of the experience is an important step within the analysis process that is shared between researcher and participant (Waters, 2017).

Discussion (2)
I will be measuring the effectiveness of providing educational material on how to reduce childhood obesity. I will weigh the children prior to beginning the educational material and after the material has been provided. My research question will include the use of diaries. This is the most appropriate instrument to use for my research question because I would like the subjects to write down what they are eating throughout the day and how much exercise they are doing every day. A diary, which allows recording shortly after an event, is thought to be more accurate than obtaining the information through recall during an interview. In addition, the reporting level of incidents is higher, and one tends to capture the participant’s immediate perception of situations (Gray, 2016, p. 418). The use of diaries for my research question will allow me to assess the compliance of diet and exercise that is recommended for the children to lose weight.
