Individual health behavior is strongly influenced by the learned expectations and behaviors associated with being a man and a woman (this process is called gender socialization). Our understanding of femininity and masculinity not only shapes our thinking about what is appropriate health behavior, but also have the potential to influence health outcomes, both negatively and positively.
1. Please describe your beliefs about and understanding of masculinity and femininity. What are attributes of someone considered manly? What are attributes of someone considered womanly? In reflecting upon and writing your response, please consider contextual factors that have influenced your thinking (family, culture, social class, race/ethnicity, peers, community, school, etc.).
