Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Latoya Alexander. I am an African American woman that have been raised my entire life in Miami Florida. I grew up in a middle class neighborhood, predominant black; but throughout high school I was exposed to a multicultural environment at American Senior High located in Miami, Lakes Florida. My career as a nurse began ten years ago upon becoming Licensed as a Practical Nurse. It was the start of my career in which I have grown a lot since that 17th day of October 2005. I can remember as if it was on yesterday, starting my first job at Select Specialty Hospital Miami. This year in October will mark my eleventh year of employment there. Throughout my journey, I became a Registered Nurse and Licensed as a Health care Risk Manager by the State of Florida. I completed the transitional program at none other than Miami Dade College back in 2010. In 2011, to prepare myself for a role overseeing the facilities Infection Prevention and Control, I became Certified in Infection Control (CIC) by the Certification Board of Infection Control & Epidemiology (CBIC). I am currently completing my second semester of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree at Miami Dade College and I hope to complete all of the course work by the spring of the upcoming year. So far the BSN program has impacted my career in the up most positive way. It has prompted me to think deeper about the processes in place and the responsibility I have individually to make a change. Global Health is important to me because health and disease that affects one impacts us all. For example, earlier this year public health authorities were discussing the Zika Virus outbreak in Brazil and not long after we experienced cases here in the United States. The Ebola virus is another example as to why Global Health has an impact on us all. I envision my role in Global Health as the teacher or educator for persons in my community that may lack the knowledge to improve their health. In most cases, if people know better, they will do better.
