Bill is a 52-year-old man living in a rural Indigenous community…. Bill is a 52-year-old man living in a rural Indigenous community. Bill grew up as the youngest of 5 children, 4 boys and one girl. His father left the family before Bill was 2 years old and his mother had severe mentalhealth issues which had its effect on the children. Two of Bill’s brothers were incarcerated at some point in their lives. The third and oldest brother committed suicide when Bill was 14.As the youngest, Bill has always been very determined to break away from the negative spiral he felt his family was in. He has always been independent and more than capable of making personal decisions that might have a significant impact on his life. Although the educational options in his community were very limited, Bill has made an effort to educate himself throughout his life. He is a mentor to others and an advocate for members of the Indigenous community. He has been married to his wife for almost thirty years and has two daughters in their twenties.Recently however, Bill’s life has changed drastically. HE suffered from a stroke and has needing extensive assistance with rehabilitation and activities of daily living. Bill has not been able to walk around freely as he once did. He became isolated and disconnected from the community.The local Aboriginal health workers, a HACC (Health and Community Care) coordinator, Bill and his family cooperated to develop a Care Plan. This plan focused on activities that Bill was able to achieve. Strategies were developed that helped him remain living independently with culturally appropriate home care services and rehabilitation. Bill expressed that traditional spiritual healing to him would be a key factor in his recovery.Case study reflection questions:1.
