I finished my psychotherapy rotation at an outpatient clinic dealing with mental illness using psychotherapy. The facility provided psychotherapy in various sessions for individual clients, groups, and families. I had an excellent preceptor who was willing to teach and help give an insight into the different therapies and managing challenging individual clients.GoalsI completed my assignment and all my goals during this clinical rotation. I was interviewing patients to obtain helpful information while I developed interviewing skills. I met several comprehensive psychiatric histories of clients, families, and groups. I differentiated between symptoms when assessing and treating individuals with psychotherapy. I was helping the clients diagnose them and suggested treatment plans to my preceptor for review.Challenging ClientsPatients with anxiety disorders such as phobias and panic disorders are challenging for delivering care (Horenstein & Heimberg, 2020). One must respond appropriately when being aggressively by psychotherapy clients, challenging personal relationships, and in a public forum where the give-and-take is contentious (Brodsky & Gutheil, 2016). Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is also a severe challenge. Patients with PTSD are complex because of the mental trauma effects administering treatment and primary care. It was difficult managing severely depressed patients. Their mood is not usually open to discussion because they are not in the mood. The therapist will encourage the patient to open during treatment. To improve compliance by feedback about what the client found significant about the session and then assigning tasks consistent with that information. Completing submission in therapy is associated with improved treatment outcomes and increases motivation and expectancy of change (Jensen et al., 2020).ExperienceI learned that handling individuals with mental disorders and the appropriate therapy with tolerances. My role as a healthcare giver is to understand the situation and manage it professionally to show stress tolerance. Effective communication encourages the clients to express their feelings. The client wants to express their thoughts. It is handing it simple for the clinician to assess the client’s symptoms (De las Cuevas et al., 2014).ResourcesThe most common resources included human resources, mental health counselors, and psychologists helping in guiding and counseling the patients. I used family psychoeducation and cognitive-behavioral therapy for the patients. Information was discovered especially useful, and I utilized a research article from the Walden Library for clinical trials on CBT, DBT, trauma-focused treatment.ChangesI would consider learning from diverse ways of handling patients with mental health disorders. It would help recommend the best patient care and address each case, taking a unique path since each patient suffers differently. I would change patient flow and time spent with each client. I thought most clients needed more time to discuss their issues and learn how to cope with their illnesses. I would increase access to care for underserved clients.Volume and FlowIt is vital to best client flow to provide client safety and quality of care. I manage patient volume and flow by scheduling each session per patient while ensuring enough help each session. If a patient needs more time discussed, the next scheduled session will be more explored. During the rotation, I gained greater insight and knowledge on challenges among those with mental illness. I am grateful for the opportunity to involve myself in this field.I am looking forward to the new opportunities with my next clinical experience and learning and contributing my knowledge and skills to mental illness.Reflect on how you might improve your skills and knowledge and communicate those efforts to your preceptor.Skills enhancement will be possible if I learn from experiences and other academic sources on managing patients with mental illnesses.Answer the questions: How am I doing? What is missing?I am doing well, though, but at the best level, I wish. The missing essential requirement is having diverse knowledge and experience operating effectively in the psychotherapy unit.Reflect on the formal and informal feedback you received from your preceptor.According to the preceptor, compassion is vital and can affect the patient care delivered. But willing to assist patients will give me more remarkable success in the field. ReferencesBrodsky, S. L., & Gutheil, T. G. (2016). Well beyond testimony.
