After hearing the discussion on the use of technology to address disparities, write a brief reflection on BOTH questions below. 1) How can technology help reduce health disparities?2) How can technology exacerbate health disparities? You can use these as an for example to help me answer:   1) How can technology help reduce health disparities?Technology can help reduce health disparities especially among older adults and people with disabilities. This is possible for those groupings because it is easier for them to have improved access to care from their homes and without the need of transportation assistance. The long-distance clinical care of telehealth and telemedicine allows providers to save costs, provide faster care to patients through no travel requirements, shorter wait times, and less time away from work. Through this, providers can save costs and see more patients with less exposure to illnesses. Patients can see test results online and receive patient education directly through the same link which was especially useful during the COVID-19 pandemic.2) How can technology exacerbate health disparities?Technology can exacerbate health disparities based on age, race, education, income, disability, community type, and English proficiency. Individuals aged 65+ are in the smallest percentage of individuals who have a smartphone at 61% (Perrin, 2021). Other categories with the smallest percentage of smartphones are of education high school or less, Hispanic race, and an income of less than $30k. There is a digital divide that occurs between these groups of individuals because of how life has transitioned with the use of technology. This has been seen drastically during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Restaurants now provide menus by QR codes that are solely accessed by smart phones. Taxis and cabs have declined in cities as Ubers and Lyfts have increased which are accessed through smart phone apps. Without the use of a smart phone, it would be very difficult for individuals in categories listed above to have access to transportation and food in a city with QR codes and Ubers.  COVID-19 also allowed mobile telehealth to manage appointments for many providers. Because of this, people without smart phones or tablets were unable to receive proper services from their providers due to lack of Wi-Fi/broadband availability region wide, absence of structural support/housing insecurity, and simply because of the inability to purchase the devices (Ramsetty & Adams, 2020). Other reasons telehealth wasn’t an option for individuals is because of mistrust of technology, inconsistent or unavailable education regarding changes in technology, and shared/cultural expectations regarding use of digital devices. This is harmful for individuals because healthcare and healthcare access is a crucial aspect of living a healthy life. Perrin, A. (2021). Mobile Technology and Home Broadband 2021. Impact of the digital divide in the age of COVID-19. Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association: JAMIA, 27(7), 1147-1148.Edited by Jennifer Haynes on Feb 4 at 11:31am  OR 1) How can technology help reduce health disparities? There are several technology systems that provide great assistance to nurses and healthcare professionals. Some of these systems that are placed throughout the hospitals are, the OMNI cell, electronic health record, smart phones, IV pumps, telemetry, and glucometer devices. These individually affect the nature of the nurse’s work in beneficial ways. The goal is to access and exchange health information more efficiently. It is easy for important information to get lost through word of mouth during a shift turnover. That’s why it’s crucial to have a software system, such as an Electronic Health Record (EHR), in the hospital that can store vast amounts of patient information. This allows health professionals to hold each other accountable on multiple levels. Technology gives us everything we need to know about medication administration, potential drug interactions and more, all at the tip of our fingers. Managing medications through the EHR improves patient outcomes over time and reduces adverse drug events by 52% (Hoover, 2017). The concept of Telehealth also brings so many positive outcomes to Patients can use Telehealth and save costs and have less waiting time in comparison to an emergency department visit.2) How can technology exacerbate health disparities?            There are multiple factors that divide the population when it comes to technology such as age, socioeconomic status, community, disabilities, and English proficiency (Hispanic populations are offline). Older adults are less likely to use the internet due to unfamiliarity and difficulties with navigating new technology. A low socioeconomic status and rural communities are less likely to be current with health news and information. People with disabilities and even decreased English proficiency may not be accommodated especially if they have lower digital literacy. About 62% of adults with a disability claim to have a personal desktop or laptop, while 81% of adults who own a device do not have a disability (Perrin, A. et. al, 2021). Individuals that fall into any of these categories were the most vulnerable to poor health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic (McClain, C. et. al, 2021). All of these categories cause a digital divide which is the reason we see such inconsistent numbers regarding to health throughout the nation.           ReferencesHoover, R. (2017).
