Due to the patient’s history of coronary artery disease for which she had two stents the orthopedic surgeon obtained consult from a cardiologist before going ahead. An internist was also consulted as to the patient’s diabetes prior to surgery.Three days after the hip surgery the advanced practice cardiology nurse practitioner who worked with the cardiologist who did the pre-surgery consult was making her rounds in the hospital. When the nurse practitioner entered the patient’s room the RN assigned to her care was giving her her medication. The RN was feeding her soft food that contained the crushed pills. The patient began to show signs of aspiration. That is, her affect became flat and she was basically unresponsive. The family who were in the room first noticed it and alerted the nurse practitioner. The nurse practitioner listened to her lungs and saw that her 02 saturation was low and told the RN to titrate her oxygen. When the RN went to get suctioning equipment, nurse practitioner also left the room, not to return. Eleven minutes later the patient coded with the RN in the room. Two minutes after that the patient was intubated by the code team. The patient was moved to the ICU where she coded again. After twenty minutes of CPR she was pronounced dead.. State the verdict.
